The Secret to Stress-Free Dog Photos? Preparation
Great Photos Start Before Session Day
There’s a common myth that magic just sort of… happens during a session.
I hate to be the one to burst that bubble, but it couldn’t be further from the truth.
The actual truth?
The sessions that produce the most emotive and expressive images are built in the days, sometimes weeks, beforehand.
Recently, I worked with a couple here in Spring, TX who truly understood that preparation is an act of love.
And it showed in their final gallery.
The reality here is that a photoshoot will likely be a new experience for your dog. Even if your dog has experienced photoshoots before, switching up your photographer or locations can also provide a sense of new-ness.
Dogs don’t know what we’re doing or what’s expected of them, and it’s unfair to put any unnecessary pressure onto them. Expecting too much, especially without the proper preparation, will make a session a lot less fun. Which is the exact opposite of what we’re going for.
These sessions are rooted in connection and play. Genuine engagement and personalities shine through a dog that is regulated, feels safe, and was ultimately prepared by their humans for the experience.
What They Did Differently
Their dogs needed a bit of an adjustment period to acclimate. One was high-energy, the other preferring snuggles and pets – and together, semi-reactive to people. There was curiosity, energy, and maybe a tendency to be easily distracted.
We landed on a location which had a short walk to the actual area we’d be shooting at, which worked wonders as it gave the dogs an opportunity to smell and get familiar with the new environment. (Which is super important!)
Instead of hoping for the best, they:
✧ Went on a short, sniff-heavy walk before our session
✧ Arrived to the location early
✧ Rewarded eye contact consistently
✧ Brought high-value treats and toys to our session
They didn’t aim for perfection.
They aimed for familiarity, connection, and the comfort of their dogs.
How It Showed on Session Day
Because they respected their dogs’ energies and thresholds, we worked with it – incorporating movement, play, and a lot of breaks.
The result?
Images that feel playful, connected, intentional, and true.
Not because their dogs were perfectly obedient, but because they felt safe.
Preparation Is Visible
When dog parents put in the time beforehand:
✧ Stress decreases
✧ Attention improves
✧ Confidence increases
✧ The entire session flows
And I’m not kidding when I say that you can see it in the final gallery. Soft eyes, relaxed posture, genuine interaction, and goofy faces. Their genuine personalities shining through.
I promise it’s worth it.
